Our Weeks in Pictures

We have had a fun two weeks. Here is our life in pictures:

Sleeping in the clubhouse

My brother- and sister-in-law slept in the shed the night of my husband's birthday last week and since then we have done it twice. Our guy would like to do it nightly.

Skating competition

My guy had his first skating competition last Saturday. He was announced; skated by himself (including going backwards, jumping and turning around); waved and blew kisses to his fans; and then stood on the podium to get his first-place medal. It was fantastic.

Skating on the lake

While the warm weather didn't help our backyard rink, it made the ice on the lake beautiful. We spent several hours on the ice both on sleds and on skates.

My brother and I had a race. I had a 20-foot head start and he skated backwards. He won. I was proud I stayed on my feet.

Registered for kindergarten

My guy was registered for kindergarten last week. It might have been the kindergarten room filled with toys, the gym and the stage or the playground, but E talked about his school for the rest of the weekend.

New furniture

My parents, aunts and uncle gave us my grandmother's dining suite, which includes this beautiful hutch. It is now full of my grandmother's dishes and Harley mugs.

Goodbye, beautiful bowl

My good friend, AC, gave me this bowl – which always reminds me of the bowl from Anne of Green Gables - as a wedding gift. There has been a crack in it for years but last week the bowl gave out. Goodbye, beautiful bowl. I miss you.

These Are a Few of My Favourite Gifts

Yesterday I was talking about the success of coming up with THE gift for my little guy, which made me think back to the fantastic gifts I have received from my parents over the years.

1. Anne of Green Gables. If you are looking for a great book, this story about an orphan who is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert is amazing. I remember discovering this book, carefully opening it and reading it under the twinkling lights of the tree.

2. Hope chest. I didn’t ask for this amazing box that up until recently stored my old journals and hid Christmas presents, but I was so happy to receive it. It’s personalized and I still love going through it looking at stuff from year’s past.

3. Classic Winnie the Pooh bookends. I think I really wanted the book ends that have Christopher Robin and Rabbit pulling Pooh out of Rabbit’s hole at one end and Pooh’s bum coming out of Rabbit’s (oh my, think of what this could have said before I realized how awful it sounded) living space at the other. I think I might have cried. They have a place of honour, holding the Anne of Green Gables series and other Lucy Maud Montgomery books on my library.

4. Desk. A desk of my own with drawers and spaces for writing gear. It now holds the computer and one of the one drawer is filled with stuff for the babe to play with.

Each year I received other gifts that I loved and appreciated, but these are the things that stick out in my mind and in which I will treasure forever.

Show of Respect

Our neighbours R&BJ are members of a hunt camp that is approaching 100 years old.

BJ was telling us there is a picture hanging on the wall of the bunker of some of the original members on the train on the way to the hunt camp. The members were dressed in suits and fedoras.

I like the fact that people used to dress up to go away; to visit neighbours; to attend the theatre; and otherwise make an appearance.

While I like the fact that I don’t have to be so formal when visiting a friend’s house (see Diana visiting Anne’s house in Anne of Green Gables), the idea of dressing up to attend the theatre or to visit someone special is nice. It shows respect. Perhaps it's time to bring back dressing up.
