Another Use for A Potty

My guy is not interested in the potty. He has had a potty that goes on the toilet for more than a year now. He sat on it once in a while, but recently he seems a little fearful of it, backing away and refusing to go near it.

At Christmas, my little one received Cailou DVDs and books, one of which showed Cailou using a freestanding potty. Since then, E has asked me for a ‘potty like Cailou’s.’

I was really hoping to avoid the potty like Cailou’s as I think it will send my weak stomach over the edge.

However, for the ease of toilet training I thought I would buy a potty like Cailou’s with the added bonus of my guy being able to go when the urge strikes.

He understands what to use it for. ‘Baby Goshua’, my Cabbage Patch Kid, pees and poops on the potty all day long, and E even knows you take the bowl out, run it to the bathroom, dump it and flush the toilet.

However, he isn’t interested in using it himself.

Instead, there are other ways to feel you got your money’s worth from a potty:

That is TOO funny! Sorry to laugh but hey, if it isn't being used for a potty an ice chest is good too!

Matthew's potty was left in the bathroom because he understood that's where peeing and pooing was done. It worked out well for him once he condescended to use it. But my house is smaller than yours so he didn't have to go as far to get to it. I think in the beginning I'd sit him on it. Sit in front of him on the ground and we'd wait. The first time he dribbled a drop of pee we danced around and said yeah! After that we'd always say yeah. But it took a little bit of time. I remember once even wetting his feet to bring on the urge. It worked. But as I recall there was some crying involved at the beginning. Once he got the hang of what I wanted him to do there though he was great. We moved the top of it to the toilet late last year and now he won't even sit on that. Puts it on the ground and sits straight on the toilet so I've put that away too.

Hang in there. Your guy will get the hang of it soon!

Cheers :-)

We have the same problem. The potty has been used as a step stool, hat and a range of other things, never a potty! So frustrating. Don't give up.

So funny! I can't stand the idea of those potties. Mine have used a potty seat on the toilet, though we did try the little potties.

We had a potty like that. Dumping it, rinsing it, etc., made me totally queasy. I was happy when my second child decided to only have a potty seat that attached to the toilet. Ugh. Potty training is the worst.

Hilarious!

We had a tiny potty like that. It was barely used.

I hate potties too. So gross. Kids need to feel comfortable and secure to use the toilet/potty. Make sure that E's feet aren't dangling if he is sitting on the toilet. If he can rest his feet on a stool he will feel much more comfortable. My potty seats for the toilet have a handle on either side. I find that really helps too, for the kids to have something to hang on to. Keep at it, don't give up. Gentle reminders consistently will help. Maybe E would like to pee standing up as well? If he can stand on a stool and pee into the toilet, he might find that fun. I've heard some people throw a few cheerios in there for something to aim at; to make it a game. Good luck!
