Blow Your Mind

Christine from Write-Brained had a Wordless Wednesday post on her blog recently that showed someone reading a book titled ‘The Power of Books’, which, literally, blew the reader’s mind.

I found it a disturbing picture but obviously it has stuck in my mind.

I am exhausted this week because I have been rereading Harry Potter. The power of the words laid down by author Jk Rowling has kept me up way past my bedtime each night and stopped me from doing anything other then the necessities when it comes to home upkeep.

The power of books is also obvious when I have recently quoted passages from a book I read when I was a preteen.

I have no idea what this book was called but I believe it had Brooklyn in the title. It was huge, thousands of pages. I have a vague idea what it was about but there was a part in it that I still remember – vividly.

The woman’s child wouldn’t stop breastfeeding so she drew a scary face on her breast and when her five-year-old son lifted up her shirt to help himself, he saw the face, screamed, and ran away. I would imagine that child is still in therapy.

I have cried, laughed out loud, snorted in disbelief and worried with the books I have read.

I believe in the power of books.

Here are a couple books you should read:

On the Beach by Neville Shute
Onyx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel
Into the Forest by Jean Hegland
The Haunting at Cliff House by Karleen Bradford (YA)

I, too, have read On the Beach, The Outlander series, and the Clan of the Cave Bear. I think the book you were referring to may have been A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. If you ever want to read something that will make you laugh out loud, read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich which starts with One For The Money. She's hilarious. I just stopped by from SITS to say hello; hope you will do the same.

I think that child is likely still in therapy too. I liked Clan of the Cave Bear but haven't read your other picks. Like you though I love to read and get totally submerged in the story and I often feel like the characters are friends.

Cheers :-)

I am ashamed to say that I have not read any of those books (and I thought I was actually a pretty good reader.) I better start cracking (although I'll probably just end up re-reading Harry Potter, too.)

Books have big power. I still have my first copy of Charlotte's Web from the 70's. And it feels alive whenever I touch it, I swear! Like Atwood very, very much.

I love books too, or at least I used to. There's nothing better than being engrossed in a book you can't put down. I'm looking for something to get going again right now, so will look at your list for inspiration.

I'm thrilled to see a list of new titles for me to work through. I'm also please to have access to a beautiful library to borrow these books from.

I'm happy to hear you are enjoying something that is just for you - it's a lovely indulgence to just sit down and read and not do anything else that you "should" be doing.

I love reading.

I'm amused about the face on the breast thing.
